Dignity Month 2012

For the second consecutive year, The Salvation Army has announced that May is Dignity Month and released a report, "Canada Speaks 2012: Mental Health, Addictions and the Roots of Poverty". The report reveals perceptions and attitudes among the Canadian public towards individuals dealing with addiction or suffering from mental illness. This report is based on a survey of more than 1,000 Canadians, conducted in February by Angus Reid Public Opinion. It reports that many Canadians have been personally touched by one or both of these issues, with 80 percent reporting that they have either a friend of family member who has experienced mental health and/or addiction. Due to this surprising number, many Canadians empathize with those that suffer from either mental illness and/or addiction and are looking to the government and social service programs to provide additional assistance to these individuals and their families.

For other interesting results and a full copy of the report, please visit SalvationArmy.ca or click on this link - http://www.salvationarmy.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/CanadaSpeaks2012_report_web.pdf.
To keep apprised of all the activities during May, visit SalvationArmy.ca often. In particular, watch each day for a new post to our "31 days of dignity" where you will find simple and practical ways each of us can promote the dignity of another person (http://www.salvationarmy.ca/dignity/31-days-of-dignity/).

In Our Backyard...And in My Backyard

CCM Recognition Sunday is scheduled for Sunday June 3rd, but each corps will recognize this ministry as it fits into the corps calendar.

This year, our theme will be ...In Our Backyardo. The idea of the theme is to live counter cultural to the NIMBY (Not in My Backyard) voices that recognize 'something needs to be done to help people, but please, NOT IN MY BACKYARD!' I do trust that you will take the time to review what CCM is called to be in your own community.

As we live in our communities'serve in our corps' grow in our relationship with Jesus, let us continue to learn from the examples and teachings of Jesus. He gave us lessons for life, how to interact and care for one another in the story of the Good Samaritan. Let us keep our eyes, our good deeds, our compassion on those He has placed on our path to reach for Him. Let us learn and live out our faith In Our Backyard.

Here in Vernon we are working on a major property proposal that now has DHQ approval and is in the hands of THQ. Please pray that all concerned will be in tune with the Lord so that His will is done. We are trusting Him to open any and all doors that lead to the fulfilment of His will.

On another front, as always it is our desire to be "one in heart and mind" in terms of our leadership team. Please pray that this will be so as we continue to walk out our values, vision, and mission.

A final request is for the Talkin Donkey, our coffee house with a cause (social justice). Please pray that it will flourish this year in every way: financially, outreach to Vernon's youth, souls for the Kingdom.
