God is Doing a New Thing Through Women's Ministries

Spring is around the corner. Within a few weeks we will begin to see fresh buds on the trees, crocuses and tulips will spring into bloom. After a long winter, there is a sense of anticipation that the freshness of spring will give new life to each day.

What a joy it’s been to read and reflect on aspects of women’s ministries across our Territory. There is a sense of expectation that God is doing a “New Thing” through women’s ministries as women embrace their relationship with God and reach out to their communities.

It is exciting to realize that within women’s ministries across our Territory there is a deep longing for more of God in the hearts of women. Prayer and Bible study have fostered new growth as women seek to know more of God and His purpose for their lives.

As women meet in small groups to search the Scripture they are growing in their journey of faith and finding a deeper experience of God’s grace unfolding for them. God is challenging them to reach out to others with the gospel message in practical ways within their communities. Prayer breakfast events and serving others as women’s groups deliver baskets at Christmas with special gifts for a lonely mom raising a family alone are evidence of the Word of God in action. Women giving a cup of cold water in the name of Jesus, as giving unto the Lord.

Women embrace the strength of praying together. In one community, weekly prayer and outreach takes place in local restaurant reminding the women that we must reach out beyond the walls of our churches. Some have organized prayer walks in local neighbourhoods and small communities as they claim people for Christ.

One such example - Staff and volunteers at a Thrift Store gather for a short devotional and prayer with a real sense that God is listening to the cries of each heart and that He longs to speak His love, comfort, hope and grace as they trust Him. The highlight of the day is when a lady calls out to the others - ‘it is prayer time’. The pride the ladies take in the store is amazing! The team work and laughter continues to be a beautiful gift from the Lord.

The gift of music through song, drama, and mime have become an avenue of service to the Lord. The women’s group “Salvation Sounds” present God’s message of salvation through the mediums of music and drama. This ministry takes place in hospitals, correctional and rehabilitation facilities, senior’s centres and their local Corps. The “Hands of God” from Yellowknife have been a blessings to others as they share in ministry in local nursing homes and the Corps.

Book Clubs have become a wonderful way to draw women together in strong Christian relationships as they discuss topics that would other wise be left alone. Women are able to identify real issues of parenting, work and responsibility and find support in the building of these relationships. These book clubs provide a safe environment for open discussion.

God is using women to raise funds for the needs of our partner in mission countries through the Territorial Women’s Ministry projects and child sponsorship. Creative markets, silent actions, homemade pies, cookies or a craft created in love are all being used to raise money to enhance the lives of those less fortunate.

One women’s ministry group is teaching individuals to develop a community garden for the purpose of good nutrition and organizing a community market. This encourages sharing with one another in community as everyone benefits from this effort

Women are so creative in finding ways to enjoy one another and share the gospel through practical ways and sharing together. This list may prompt you to ask God to open an opportunity to begin something new in your community:

Isaiah declared to the Israelites that God would do new things in their lives. Isaiah 43:19 “…See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”

As women utilize their God-given capabilities, we are working together to advance God’s Kingdom in new, creative ways that engage one another in relationship together and with the Lord. God is doing a great work in our territory through women.
